  • An article in the Guardian recently reported that the registered population of online communities such as Second Life and Blue Mars is greater than that of the US and Europe combined. Like it or not we are all connected by a global grid with the space between social media and virtual worlds getting smaller each day. Virtual Apps for Facebook are being released at an astonishing rate. There are on line communities for children like Club Penguin, ToonTown etc. Behind all the hype and suspicions about these brave new worlds, with their avatars, virtual currencies and propensity for escapism, lies a fascinating community of artists, musicians, scientists, writers, film makers, designers, educators, researchers and such who are using virtual environments to further their creative collaborations.
  • Jan Pulsford is one such person. A Composer, producer, songwriter, keyboardist, virtual artist + explorer in the world of music + technology, she has lived a life of music working in the UK and USA with artists from the Thompson Twins to Cyndi Lauper, producing music for Film + TV + many indie artists. Her environment is a behind the scenes world of creative collaboration using virtual worlds, cloud computing + global networking, driven by a pioneering spirit and love for technology. At Campfire she will share her experiences of working in virtual reality and what really lies behind the monitor in the land known to many as the metaverse.

"The topic of Virtual Worlds is a huge and fascinating subject. People use them in so many different ways - from business meetings to education, global festivals to medical research, support groups to fund raisers - If you can imagine it you can make it happen.
Yoko Ono recently tweeted "The alternative is to do what the reality is not capable of doing." Artists are always looking for new ways to push the envelope. Many creatives use a virtual world as a complimentary parallel to their real life, trying out new ideas and business models.
Charity events are a huge part of the live music and events scene in Second Life. Last July the American Cancer Society's Sixth Relay for Life raised $222,804 in two days. Another positive impact of Second Life is for those whose mobility is impaired and because of illness, disability or social circumstances cannot leave their house or even their bed. Here they get the chance to experience a virtual life when the real one is no longer available."
